The name Ambengan comes from Balinese which means weed grass. Previously, Ambengan village was known as Sukadana village, but because of the large amount of weeds in this village, it became known as Ambengan. Ambengan Village is located around 400-1000 meters above sea level and is flanked by 3 hills.
Initially there was only one banjar in Sukadana village, namely Pebantenan, given the name Pebantenan because it used to be a place of prayer (mebanten) for village residents because it was the highest place in Sukadana village. After walking for some time, on November 22 1815, Tamblingan Lake overflowed, resulting in 17 villages sinking in mud 20-40 feet thick.
The 17 villages are Kede, Mendala, Tapuk Base, Sambangan, Bangkang, Galiran, Panji, Beratan, Banjar Tengah, Banjar Badung, Bungkulan, Buleleng, Pabean, Sukasada, Banyuning and Pebantenan which resulted in 1,252 fatalities. Because Pebantenan had been destroyed by the overflowing water and mud of Lake Tamblingan, the surviving residents finally moved to the eastern part of Sukadana Village. Apart from that, the Sukadana area also has awide expanse of grassland and is a very fertile area which is ultimately used as a stopover and resting place for traders (Pengalu) from Central, South and East Bali who sell to the North Bali (Buleleng) region. centered in the city of Singaraja. Therefore, traders (Pengalu) who passed through the Sukadana area gave it the name "Ambengan". So, over time, the name Sukadana disappeared and was known as Ambengan until now.
